In the first days of October, the capital of Spain hosts the popular event Madrid Architecture Week. Last year it was organized in the period from 3rd to 10th October by the Official College of Architects in Madrid and several other important institutions and organizations. Each issue of this event has a certain aim and during its last issue, the Madrid Architecture Week had the aim to make Madrid city into an important international reference point.
Madrid Architecture Week is not however some boring event open only for specialists in the field. It is open for visitors and tourists and last year during its last issue the visitors were presented some of the finest buildings in the city of Madrid and the secrets of their construction. Among the Madrid buildings that were open for visitors were constructions of modern architecture and some historical sites. Various guided tours were also organized during the Madrid Architecture Week. They covered the areas along the modern homes in Sanchinarro, Gran Via and Calle Alcala, the Casa de Campo and the Tiles in Madrid.
The other special events that were set in the Madrid Architecture Week program were different open discussions and special guided tours with architecture students and lecturers that covered more than a dozen buildings and Madrid apartments in the capital of Spain. Among the sites that were visited during the event were Casa Árabe and Casa de las Flores, the Spanish Historical Heritage Institute, as well as the site of the Royal Astronomical Observatory, Madrid Metro Engine Shed and the construction site of the Museum of Royal Collections. The rest of the places that were visited were the Residencia de Estudiantes, the Crown of Thorns at Ciudad Universitaria, as well as the BBVA Tower. There were also guided tours at the Cibeles Palace, where visitors could see the construction and renovation of the Antigua Casa de Correos y Telégrafos with its glass dome, where was then settled the City Council in Madrid.
Madrid Architecture Week program for tourists also included some screenings ofdocumentary films, as well as some photographic exhibitions. Further were arranged different lectures, classes and discussions that were focused on those participants in the event who showed professional interest in it. Different guided tours were organized which covered different areas of the city including Cuartel del Conde Duque and Cibeles Palace. The cultural centre Conde Duque was constructed to be used as barracks for the best military units back in year 1717, which used to protect the royal family. Years later, this center served as a cultural center and today it is renovated to welcome a new auditorium, a theatre and a large exhibition center. Guided tours were being organized on the banks of Manzanares River as well, where the attention was concentrated on the new bridges being built, the sport zones and the nice promenade along the urban beach area.
